Just Life – Dr. Liz Corcoran Shares Her Experience of Supporting a Brother with Down Syndrome

Dr. Liz Corcoran, who is a doctor with her own private practice that can be found by clicking Functional Medicine, share with the Radio Maria England community about the experiences she had with supporting her brother with down syndrome on the “Just Life” programme on Thursday, 3 February.  She shared how she grew up with the need to be the champion for her brother, David, and that she needed to educate others about her brother.  This sense of duty lead her into an education of psychiatry and medicine.  It was through her religious life and the prayer group, Soul Food, that helped her realise that she needed to give herself permission to have a life outside of her commitments to her brother.  She continues to support her mother and David, but has been able to better fulfil her personal life and life with her own children, Daniel and Rose.

Liz shared with listeners these helpful groups:

  • Sibs exists to support people who grow up with or have grown up with a disabled brother or sister. It is the only UK charity representing the needs of over half a million young siblings and over one and a half million adult siblings.  To find out more, please visit https://www.sibs.org.uk/
  • Embracing Complexity brings together organisations working to improve the lives of people with neurodevelopmental conditions. Most people with neurodevelopmental conditions (NDCs) have more than one, but most services and policies are set up to look at one “box” at a time. We are a coalition of over 60 organisations – including charities, research bodies, Royal Colleges, and social enterprises – working towards a world where everyone with neurodevelopmental conditions can achieve their potential. We believe we can reach that goal more effectively by working together.  To find out more information, please click here: https://embracingcomplexity.org.uk/
  • Liz is also the founder of the UK’s only Down’s syndrome research charity, Down’s Syndrome Research Foundation. To view their website, click here:  https://www.dsrf-uk.org/.  Their vision is a long, healthy, happy life for people with Down’s syndrome (DS) and their families.  They bring the best scientific research to the issues affecting our community by:
    • Funding and promoting ground-breaking medical research;
    • Improving understanding of Down’s syndrome;
    • Supporting the human rights of people with Down’s syndrome and their families through advocacy.
