New Beginnings. New Year Letter for Volunteers

At Radio Maria we are already beginning to think about the New Year and the season of Epiphany, and our attention begins to turn away from the Baby in the crib towards the journey of those mysterious strangers, called by tradition the Magi, the Wise Men, or the Three Kings.  These ‘wise men’ appear briefly in Matthew’s Gospel (Matt. 2:1-12), although the text does not specify how many there were.  Matthew calls them ‘Magi’ a term that normally refers to Persian Zoroastrian priests.

It is evident from the attention given to these travellers from the East that there is something captivating about these ethereal figures and they were seekers after truth, willing to follow the light of a star because they were convinced it would lead them to the light of God.

As part of our Radio Maria family, you are travelling with us following Mary as our guiding star into a new year with all of its challenges and opportunities.  However, we are not just truth seekers, like the wise men, but together we are light bringers.  You are helping us broadcast into homes and hearts the wonderful message of the love of God revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

There is another way that our volunteers are like the wisemen – you bring your gifts to the service of our Lord.  St Paul writes that the Lord gives different gifts to his Church for the works of ministry (Eph. 4:12) and the gifts you bring are different, but all are essential and complementary.  Thank you for all that you bring to our shared mission and may God bless this service of love as together we bring the light of Christ to the faithful, the hopeful, the seekers and the lost.
